Artist's Description
"The Lone Sailor" is the centerpiece of the memorial to the US sea service members located at the northern visitors center of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The memorial was dedicated in 2002 to past and currently enlisted members of the Navy, Marines, Merchant Marines & the Coast Guard who selflessly left their home and family to serve and protect their country.
"The Lone Sailor" is representative of the last view that a sailor will have of their homeland, prior to being shipped out for duty at sea. He overlooks the San Francisco bay with a solemn look on his face, as though he is deep in thought. Pondering the beloved country he is about to leave behind.
